says upcoming foe Hawaii is 'as good as Boise State' Despite
its 5-2 record and impressive offensive numbers, Hawaii isn't getting
much respect in the national polls.
But WAC coaches -- the ones who have to face the Warriors -- sing
a different tune.
"You're playing against a football team that is, in my opinion,
as good as Boise State, and they proved that week in and week out,"
said Idaho coach Dennis Erickson, whose Vandals travel to face Hawaii
on Saturday.
Boise State is currently ranked No. 15 in the BCS standings and
defeated Hawaii 41-34 in September at Bronco Stadium.
But New Mexico State coach Hal Mumme, whose team has lost to Boise
State and Hawaii, believes the Warriors are the better team.
"Hawaii is the best team we've played," Mumme said during
Monday's WAC coaches teleconference. Last week, Mumme told the Honolulu
Star-Bulletin: "They're the best team in the WAC -- better
than Boise State ... No question."
Hawaii Quarterback Colt Brennan has thrown for 1,567 yards and
19 touchdowns in the past four games. He also has thrown 120 consecutive
passes without an interception.
He leads the nation in pass efficiency at 183.1. Hawaii is second
in the nation in scoring at 42.1 points per game.
"They're scoring so many points that I can't even count that
high half the time," Erickson said.
The Warriors have won four in a row since the loss to Boise State.
Idaho
The Vandals are dealing with several injuries entering Saturday's
game at Hawaii. Freshman receiver Max Komar, who has 15 catches
for 278 yards, is out until the Nov. 18 Fresno State game, at best,
Erickson said.
Running back Brian Flowers, who reinjured his ankle against Boise
State, is questionable. Wide receiver Lee Smith (knee) also is questionable.
Tight end Keith Greer, who suffered a high ankle sprain against
New Mexico State, also is questionable.
Boise State
Senior quarterback Jared Zabransky has won 28 games as a starting
quarterback -- the most of any active quarterback in Division I-A.
Zabransky is 28-5 in three seasons as the starter -- 11-1 in 2004,
9-4 in 2005 and 8-0 this year.
San Jose State
Cornerback Dwight Lowery made his national-best eighth interception
last week against Nevada. He has picked off a pass in five of the
Spartans' six games and has more interceptions than 79 Division
I-A teams.
Lowery already has tied the school record for interceptions in
a season. The WAC record is 11.
Nevada
The Wolf Pack are getting exceptional play from backup quarterback
Travis Moore, who replaced starter Jeff Rowe in the second half
against Hawaii and started in his place last week in a win over
San Jose State.
Moore was 20-of-28 for 178 yards and a touchdown against San Jose
State. He also rushed for a TD. He tossed two TD passes against
Hawaii.
Rowe, hobbled by a hamstring injury, is expected to start Saturday
at home against New Mexico State. However, he also was expected
to start last week.
The Wolf Pack have won eight consecutive home games, including
a convincing 23-7 defeat of the Spartans last week.
"We got whipped pretty much every way you can get whipped,"
San Jose State coach Dick Tomey said.
Fresno State
The Bulldogs have lost six straight for the first time since 1978
going into their Nov. 1 date with Boise State at Bronco Stadium.
Fresno State is the only team in the nation without an interception
on defense.
