Tennis
trip to Hawaii not all fun in the sun
Maybe you recall a story I wrote a couple of weeks ago chronicling
the journey of area tennis players Jill Bratberg and Jane Bentz
of La Crosse and Kathy Kryzenske of Onalaska, Wis.
The three players hooked up with an Eau Claire-based United States
Tennis Association team, played well, had fun and wound up receiving
an at-large bid to a sectional tournament in Minneapolis.
To make a long story short, the team won the sectional tournament,
therefore earning a totally unexpected trip to the USTA national
tournament in Hawaii.
Wolves
march off to Hawaii on Sunday - Performing at Pearl Harbor anniversary;
only college band in Holiday Parade
On Sunday, the Northern State University Marching Wolves and a
special guest will embark on the trip of a lifetime -- to Hawaii
for the Waikiki Holiday Parade, commemorating the 65th anniversary
of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the island of Oahu.
The bombing of Pearl Harbor marked the United States' entrance
into World War II. A total of 2,390 members of the military forces
died as a result of the attack.
Last year, Marching Wolves director Boyd Perkins sent letters to
the 15 surviving South Dakota World War II veterans, inviting them
to travel with the band to Hawaii.
Tropical
storm - Brennan leads the way as Hawaii scores early and often in
routing Fresno State
Most humiliating ever, one Fresno State player said. Maddening,
another added. Worst loss yet, a Bulldog echoed.
Say any bad word or any negative phrase, and it would accurately
describe Fresno State's performance Saturday. Probably the Bulldogs'
entire season. Heck, throw in the last four games of last season,
too.
Fresno State lost 68-37 to Hawaii before an announced crowd of
39,122 on homecoming, closing one chapter on close losses but starting
a new one under brutal beatings.
